    The government on Saturday put former Jatiya Sangsad deputy speaker Akhter Hamid Siddiqui in detention for 30 days under the Special Powers Act 1974.

    Bangabandhu’s birthday

    The nation today observes the 89th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the National Children Day with solemnity and festivity.
    ‘As the BDR is a disciplinary force and its members killed officers of another disciplinary force, they can be tried under the Army Act,’ law minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed told reporters after an inter-ministry meeting held on Wednesday at the law ministry.
    Delay in determining procedure for trying BDR mutineers creates doubt in public mind as to expedited trial and punishment to the killers of many army officers. Although the Prime Minister and others within the government are saying that special tribunal will be formed or trial will be held at court martial by enacting new law, nothing has been done yet.

    Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina this (Saturday) morning placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhanmondi on the occasion of the historic March 7.

    The government has reconstituted the committee to investigate the February 25–26 rebellion of soldiers in the BDR headquarters as countrywide army troop deployment began on Monday to capture the rebels still in hiding, officials said.
