Three students who returned from three weeks in Mexico have tested positive for swine flu, New Zealand authorities said Tuesday.

The students, who were part of a study group, tested positive for H1N1 virus, said Dr. Mark Jacobs, public health director.

Their test specimens had been sent to the World Health Organization after they were found to have influenza A — the general category of strains that includes the H1N1 swine flu.

The group — 22 students and three teachers from Auckland’s Rangitoto College — returned to New Zealand via Los Angeles, California, on Saturday.

They remain quarantined at home.

Meanwhile, test results for three people from New Zealand’s Northcote College who also traveled abroad came back negative, authorities said.
