Nineteen more soldiers and a sweeper of the Bangladesh Rifles were on Saturday remanded in custody for three days for interrogation in connection with the case related to the rebellion in the BDR headquarters in February 25–26.    The Criminal Investigation Department’s senior assistant superintendent of police Abdul Kahhar Akand, also the investigation officer of the case, sought them to be remanded for 10 days.

The people remanded are sepoy Sohel Rana, sepoy Rabiul Islam, sepoy Al Amin, sepoy Siddiqur Rahman, seopy Manjur Alam, sepoy Al Amin Mondal, sepoy Shambhu Nath Sen, sepoy Shafiqul Islam, sepoy Nur Alam, sepoy Yusuf Ali, sepoy Humayun Kabir, sepoy Shafiqul Islam, sepoy Enamul Huq, sepoy Zakir Hossain, sepoy Shawkat Osman, sepoy Barek Alam, lance naik Siddiqur Rahman, naik Ziaul Huq, signal man Habibur Rahman and sweeper Nurul Huq.

The 19 BDR men who were earlier remanded were, meanwhile, sent to the Dhaka central jail on Saturday on completion of their five-day remand while 18 more BDR men were shown arrested, which took the total figure of arrest in connection with the BDR rebellion case filed with the Lalbagh police to 300. Sources close to investigation said 20 BDR men were being interrogated by the Task Force Interrogation members about the killing in the BDR headquarters. Some BDR men gave vital information on the reasons and the perpetrators behind the killing, a senior CID official said.

 The investigators are now cross-checking the information elicited from the BDR soldiers, he said.
A central directive centre has, meanwhile, been set up in the CID headquarters at Malibagh in Dhaka to coordinate the teams investigating the killing in the BDR headquarters. The centre collects information from the teams and gives necessary instruction to them, he said.


The eight FBI members who arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday night to help the investigation of the rebellion inspected the crime scene along with others investigators twice on Wednesday and Thursday. The Lalbagh police officer-in-charge, Nabajyoti Khisha, filed the case with on March 1 on charges of arson, looting, indiscriminate firing, hiding bodies of army officers and holding them hostage, rioting, illegal gathering, causing huge losses to property and committing other criminal activities.

Relatives of BDR members gathered in front of the Gate 4 of the BDR headquarters and started rallying when the authorities did not allow them to meet the soldiers inside in the morning. The demonstrators sat on the road in front of the gate and blocked traffic for a few minutes. The police later dispersed them while the authorities allowed relatives of 13 BDR solders in the headquarters. The BDR men, who were sent home on leave on their reporting to the headquarters on March 1, started joining work on Saturday, said a BDR soldier.

 On Saturday, the BDR director general, Brigadier General Mainul Islam, visited the sector headquarters in Mymensingh, a battalion in Jamalpur and a border outpost at Kamalpur in Jamalpur as a part of exchange of view with the border guards in connection with the reformation of the force.
