Bangladesh Awami League (AL) is firm that it will not take
part in any elections without ensuring permanent release
of party President Sheikh Hasina and amid the State of
Emergency.
Acting AL President Zillur Rahman on Saturday reiterated this demand while addressing a protest meeting of central AL committee at Engineers' Institution in the capital as part of party's countrywide demonstration programme in protest against the 'false and fabricated' cases lodged against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and keeping emergency rule in effect across the country.
"The history says that the country cannot be ruled by a controlled democracy. Through the State of Emergency, the Caretaker Government violated the Constitution of the country and ignored the fundamental rights of the people since two years of their regime. But the people will not tolerate it any more," the veteran AL leader observed.
Urging partymen as well as all patriotic people to remain alert against the defeated conspirators who are hatching conspiracy to foil the upcoming general election slated for December 18, he said, "Take preparation for the next course of action, if it's necessary our movement would continue until our party chief Hasina is freed unconditionally and permanently for the greater interest of a free, fair and acceptable general elections."
AL Presidium Member Amir Hossain Amu threatened to launch a mass movement to release Hasina, if she is not freed permanently within October 30.
"People are eagerly waiting for national polls lined up
for December 18. Countrymen won't allow playing ducks and
drakes with regards to polls. The incumbent government
must assure the people that the ensuing Jaitya Sangasad
poll will be held as per the announced date," he said
adding, "A deep-rooted conspiracy is being hatched by the
anti-liberation forces against democracy and polls of the
country. AL will have to proceed upholding its ideology
with utmost sincerity."
About the participation of all political parties in next polls, Amu said, "The authorities concerned should not take any step that might thwart the polls. It would not be considerate to reschedule the election date raising the issue of how many political parties are going to participate in the ensuing polls."
Referring to ongoing party registration process, another party Presidium Member Abdur Razzak was very critical about the BNP constitution and said, "Patronisers of militant outfits and the anti- liberation forces are plotting against registration with the Election Commission as there are no democratic practices in their party's charter. They have also no faith in democracy."
He demanded of the government to shift the date of the Uapzila Parishad Polls by more than one month.
Acting AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam reiterated that no election will be allowed without Hasina's permanent release while results of the polls would not be acceptable both at home and outside the country keeping emergency in effect.
"If the election is deferred, an uncertainty would ensue in country's politics and the incumbent government would be responsible for that," he cautioned.
