Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said a Parliamentary
Committee comprising Members of Parliament from all political parties
will be formed to review Bangladesh's position on the construction of
Tipaimukh Dam on the Barak River by neighboring India.
She
spoke of the decision when Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan
Chakravarty called on her at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO)
yesterday. "The Parliamentary Committee will visit the areas around the
Tipaikmukh region and report its findings. After submission of the
report, the position of Bangladesh on the construction of Tipaimukh Dam
will be decided," she said.
Sheikh Hasina, through the
diplomat, again congratulated President of the Indian Congress Sonia
Gandhi and Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on the Congress-led
United Progressive Alliance (UPA)' s victory in the Loksabha elections.
The Prime Minister and the Indian High Commissioner both
expressed the hope that the progressive governments of Bangladesh and
India need to work maintaining the two neighboring countries' friendly
relations for welfare of the people of this region.
Briefing
newsmen after the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam
Azad said Sheikh Hasina laid emphasis on attaining peace and
advancement of the people through regional cooperation. "Poverty is the
main enemy of the South Asian region," she said.
She also said
Bangladesh believes in maintaining friendly and peaceful relations with
all countries, particularly with the neighbors.
Hasina and
Pinak also discussed various other issues of bilateral interest and
expressed the common desire that the existing friendly relations
between the two countries would strengthen further in the days to come.
Pinak mourned the death of eminent nuclear scientist and Sheikh
Hasina's husband Dr MA Wazed Miah and prayed for his eternal peace.
The envoy in the meeting also informed the Prime Minister about the electoral system of India.
Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Secretary Mollah Waheeduzzaman and former Ambassador Ziauddin were present.
