The home ministry has directed the law enforcement agencies to take strict measures to check extortion, mugging and looting in the capital.

The home ministry has directed the law enforcement agencies to take strict measures to check extortion, mugging and looting in the capital.

The ministry also asked the law enforcement agencies to stop land grabbing by influential people.

"We have directed them to take action with an iron hand, and asked them to bring the land grabbers to book," State Minister for Home Affairs Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj said today while talking to reporters after an internal meeting of the ministry.

Referring to BNP's street agitation over party Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Dhaka Cantonment house, the minister said the government would not allow any kind of agitation programme that could hamper public security and safety.

"The Awami League government will not allow any kind of extra-judicial killing, but the law enforcers have the right of self-defence as per the Constitution," Taj said replying to a question when asked about 'crossfire' by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
